February 2023 Topic: If you could tell someone one thing to watch out for when starting a business, what would it be?

By Katja Chen with Joy Through Choices

The most helpful advice I’ve been given when starting my own business was, “Don’t reinvent the wheel.”

Easier said than done, right?

We all have this desire to do it our own way, leave our mark, our unique footprint. We don’t want to copy anyone or represent the “been there, done that” category.  Our business is meant to reflect us, our uniqueness, and our difference, right? So we spend a lot of time and money figuring out what sets us apart, how we want to do “our thing”… and we overlook a basic principle: Success leaves clues.

My mentor told me to find someone who has what I want and then do what they do.  That does not mean regurgitating every word they say or adapting the way they talk, walk or dress.  It means looking at how they structure their day.  How they set priorities and balance their life.  How they handle the mundane part of the business; the action steps and activities that generate revenue.  Once comfortable with that, we can put our own “spin” on it and shape the way we do business, but only then.

With that, I repeat the advice I was given and the one I’ve shared many times in the past few years:  Don’t reinvent the wheel.  Follow a person who has what you want and do what they do.  Success leaves clues.

Cheering you on!

December Topic: Define Success

By Katja Chen, Independent Consultant with Isagenix International

Google’s definition of success is, “The accomplishment of an aim or purpose”.

At first glance, I don’t like this definition because I immediately think it is tied to a set goal or deadline. For example, a certain amount of income; a title like director; or, a marathon champion.

For 2023, I absolutely have a title and a monthly income as my target. However, achieving those targets does not define my success.  Titles and compensation are the results of little steps taken consistently over a period of time.  Those little steps are the successes I will celebrate!

I drank more water this week than last week. Success!

I reached out to new people every day this week. Success!

I spent more quality time with my family this week. Success!

I implemented a new tool I learned. Success!

I had uncomfortable conversations I avoided in the past. Success!

I am better today than I was yesterday. Success!

Looking back at the Google definition from that angle, I do like it!  Like Wayne Dyer once said, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

What are some seemingly small things that YOU accomplish daily or weekly? I welcome you to take a moment to recognize them as successes and to celebrate them accordingly.

How different would it feel, how proud and confident would we all be if we recognized the small wins and called them successes, instead of waiting for that promotion, title, or financial reward?

Here’s to ALL your successes in 2023!

August Topic: What is your favorite playlist and what does it say about you?

My favorite playlist is called, “Katja’s Good Mood List.”

Currently there are sixteen songs on that particular playlist ranging from Bon Jovi to Michael Bublé.  I love the variety of performers and musical styles; the common theme of happiness and encouragement.

The songs get my head right in the morning, wake me up, and leave me humming all day.

On days when my job is challenging and I feel frustrated or annoyed, playing these songs on my 20‑to‑30‑minute drive home makes all the difference on how I show up for my family once I step through the doors at home.

Can music really have that much of an impact in just a short time?  Absolutely yes!!!!  It’s been scientifically proven how certain sound waves affect the cells in our body, creating a higher or lower vibration.  Our body can’t help but respond to that!  You don’t believe it?  Listen to Shakira’s, “Try Everything” from the movie Zootopia and tell me how it made you feel.  Did you smile, tap your feet?  Careful when driving…. J

Having a playlist fits in with my mantra of “Joy through Choices” as I can add or delete songs to my liking.

If you would like to hear the songs from my list, just reach out, I would be happy to share the link!

July Topic: What is something early on in your business that scared you but does not now?

By Katja Chen Independent Consultant with Isagenix International

I was afraid to talk about the products I sell.

When I first started sharing my personal experience using amazing nutritional products, I was afraid that people might ask me questions I could not answer.  For example: What are the ingredients?  Why are they in this product?  What are the benefits?  What are possible side effects?  Why is this different from what I can get at the store?

So, what did I do?  I took my sponsor Jennifer with me to appointments and let her do the talking.  She is a certified nutritional counselor and has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to ingredient labels, raw materials, sourcing, and processing.  She would explain everything from benefits of certain ingredients to how to plan out a day or a week with foods and supplements.  Helpful, right?  Well, while Jennifer was full of good intentions to help my potential customer get their questions answered, it put me into full “Deer in the headlight” mode. I knew I could never explain it the way she did.  I felt incompetent, insecure, not ready to share what I knew would be beneficial for so many people.

Fast forward a few years to today.  What changed?  I listened to trainings the company provided, learned from other leaders in the company, and one message was clear over and over: Use the tools!  With so many resources at my fingertips, I have no reason to know it all, I just need to know how to tell a compelling story and share relevant information based on my customer’s needs.

I now share my story with confidence.  The information I provide is gathered by a research and development team of professionals in the wellness field, backed by scientific research, and yet, still easy to understand.  It brings me joy that I can help my customers make educated decisions about their health and overall wellbeing.

June Topic: Share a moment when your business met the need of a client.

One of my more recent customers ordered our super smoothie and a supplement because his goal is to release some weight and gain his natural energy back.  He’s a busy business owner and on most days does not have time to stop for lunch, so he used to grab something on the go which of course was not supporting his wellness goals.  After just a short time, he noticed his pants fitting better, he lost cravings for unhealthy foods, and he started feeling better overall.  Little did I know at the time we met that he was scheduled to undergo oral surgery in the summer.  He had some dental work done last year around this time and shared with me how challenging it was afterwards to eat anything at all, that it took a long time to bounce back from the procedure.  Sure, he had lost weight because he couldn’t eat… but he was also weak.  Not the way he wanted to drop the pounds.

Once I found out that part two of the procedure was happening in the summer of 2022, I encouraged him to drink his shakes whenever he felt hungry, and it didn’t matter how many a day he needed or wanted.  This was not about caloric intake; this was about getting him the nutrition to allow his body to heal properly.

I am happy to report that he can consume the shakes without pain, they fill him up, and he feels good… energized.  He remembers how challenging the recovery was from the first procedure and feels a great deal of improvement recovering the second time around. I know I have gained a loyal customer for life!
